Measuring is the whole job. Flue tile is measured outside, not inside. Two flues often sit at different heights. That rules out a shared crown-mount lid. Tile that stands barely above the wash gives set screws nothing to grip. Then we switch to an anchored crown plate. Clay tile chips when screws are overtightened. We back off before that happens.

Factory-built fireplaces are a separate trade. The chase cover is the part that fails. Flat galvanized covers pond water at the center. Rust bleeds down stucco in brown lines. You can see it from the driveway. A new cap on a dead chase cover is wasted work. Replacement covers are fabricated off-site to our field measurements.

Spark arrestor mesh is the local wrinkle. Brush-adjacent and very-high-fire-severity parcels have screen opening requirements. Decorative caps with wide openings do not satisfy that. Pine needles and eucalyptus debris clog fine mesh fast here. Check it after wind events.

Coastal and canyon air kills plain galvanized steel. Stainless fasteners on a stainless lid avoid galvanic corrosion. What moves cost is access and count: steep tile roofs, multiple flues, custom widths. If your draft problem is flue sizing, a cap will not fix it. We would rather say so.
